Conceptualised by Leonardo da Vinci in the early part of sixteenth century, Contact Lens is one of the most important discoveries in the history of medical science. Most people after a certain age have problem with their vision. Sometimes it is difficult to wear spectacles. This is where contact lenses solve the problem. They are made from special plastic material and are directly placed on the eye. Contact lenses are mainly used to correct eye vision but sometimes they are also used for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons People choose to wear contact lenses for many reasons, for some it's just for a better vision and for some it's about style and fashion. A spherical contact lens specially bends light in every direction and are typically used to cure myopia and hyperopia. Some spherical rigid lenses are also used to correct astigmatism. But mainly for astigmatism the popularly used lens is a 'toric' contact lens. That's because toric contact lens has a different focusing power horizontally than it does vertically. Where as in curing of presbyopia two type of lenses are required that is multifocal and monovision. Nowadays even there is solution for colour-blind an individual, that is by using a red-tinted "X-Chrom" contact lens. Even though it cannot restore full coloured vision, it helps people with colour blindness to distinguish colours a little better. But this was only the medical use of contact lens. In fact nowadays using a contact lens to change the colour of your eye has become a fashion. These lenses are commonly known as decorative contact lens. Nowadays it accounts only three percent of the total contact lens used in the world.
